PROJECT SETUP
To create your project, the first things you’re going to need are a measuring tape, pen and paper! Start by taking measurements of the area you would like cable railing for.
Measure each side of the space and the length of any stairs the railing should go along, rounding up to the nearest foot. Be sure to note any corners and complete a simple, labeled sketch of your space, like this one:
This sketch will be a helpful reference as you build your project with us, so keep it handy!
Now it’s time to make your selections and fill out the form. Please note that each straight portion of railing along a side or stair is considered one segment. For example, the sketch above shows that the area will include 6 segments. You will need to fill in the form below for each segment, clicking “add another segment” when you are ready to move onto the next one.
When you are done adding all your segments, you can click “Check Out” to view your cart and confirm each segment is correct before placing your order!
If you have any questions along the way, our team is here to support you. Don’t hesitate to contact us!
SEGMENT OPTIONS
CityPost ships enough posts for maximum 6FT center to center spacing.
We offer two(2) post materials: zinc plated steel & stainless steel. We highly recommend selecting stainless steel if you live within five(5) miles of the ocean.
Most projects use our default zinc plated steel. This material utilizes the high strength of steel which allows for a slim post profile to help you maximize the view from your deck. This strength combines with the corrosion-resistant properties seen in other metals like aluminum.
If your project consists of any exterior railing within five(5) miles of the ocean, we highly recommend selecting stainless steel. This will ensure your posts are marine rated and ready to withstand the harshest conditions.
Select the orientation of this segment’s railing, whether horizontal or stairs.
This selection determines how tall your railing is going to be. We offer two(2) railing height options: 36” & 42”.
36” railing has eleven(11) cable strands, while 42” railing has thirteen(13) cable strands. Both options have the cable spaced at 3” on center. All of our cable railing comes with marine grade 316 stainless steel cable and cable hardware.
While uncommon, if you want 42” stair posts please reach out directly to our sales staff via e-mail: orders@citypost.com OR via phone: 855-GET-CITY.
Remember: Always check with your local code for railing requirements.
We offer two(2) mounting types for your railing: base and fascia. Either can be applied to each of your segments.
Base mounting is used to mount posts to the top surface of your deck or stairs.
Fascia mounting is used to mount posts around the front or side surface of your deck or stairs.
All of our cable railing posts and top rail are powder coated to industry standard specifications using exterior rated surface treatments.
Are you securing the posts into traditional wood framing (most common) or are you mounting the posts into concrete (less common)? Select your mounting surface and we’ll make sure you get the right hardware.
All orders ship with 1”x3” powder coated aluminum top rail with every order shipped in 6FT pieces with “sleeves” to join the top rail on top of every post.
However, our system was designed to integrate with any type of natural wood top rail that you may want to use (ipe/ironwood, oak, maple, etc). For each section, you can elect to not include a top rail and we’ll deduct $5/ft from your order.
What is the length in feet of the segment, rounded up to the nearest whole number?
Briefly describe the location of the segment in relation to your structure and / or the rest of the project. This will help our quality team ensure your order has been set up successfully.
In this section, you'll select the posts the segment will have at its beginning and end.
- Standard Start/Stop Post (MOST COMMON) – Make this selection if this segment is starting at this point and is not a continuation from a single corner post. NOTE: You will make this selection for ALL CORNERS that are not continuing from a single corner post.
- None – Make this selection if the previous segment you entered ENDS with a SINGLE CORNER POST OR HORIZONTAL TO STAIR CORNER
- Standard Stair Post: Make this selection is this is a stair segment that is NOT a continuation from a previous segment that ended with a HORIZONTAL STAIR TO CORNER POST.
STAIR POST
- Standard Start/Stop Post – Make this selection if your segment is terminating at this point. NOTE: You will make this selection if you want 2 posts at a 90 degree corner AND FOR ALL OTHER CORNERS (45 deg, 22.5 deg, 11.25 deg).
- Single Corner Post – Make this selection if you are turning a 90 degree corner and would like a single post at the corner. NOTE: for your next segment you will select NONE as the start post.
- Horizontal to Stair Corner Post – Make this selection if you are turning a 90 degree corner from a horizontal segment into a stair segment and would like a single post at this corner. NOTE: If you would like 2 posts at this corner, simply select “Standard Start/Stop Post” for this segment and select “Standard Stair Post” for the start AND stop post for the next segment.
- Standard Stair Post – Make this selection if you are terminating a stair segment.

PLEASE NOTE: Straight sleeves are automatically included with your order, you will receive (1) straight sleeve with every piece of top rail we send.
If your segment is continuing from a previous segment, select "NONE." Otherwise select “END CAP” and we’ll include an end cap for the top rail termination.
We offer corner sleeves in standard measurements: 90 DEGREES, 45 DEGREE, 22.5 DEGREES, & 11.25 DEGREES. If your project needs a custom angle please contact us and we will be happy to assist you with that.
